Understand the mass departure as a transformation of people, institutions and memory across borders.

Historical context

1950–1951: departure and transformed geography

In 1950 Iraq passed a law allowing Jews to leave after renouncing citizenship. Operation Ezra and Nehemiah transported about 119,000 Iraqi Jews during 1950–1951. The atlas follows what happened to the geography left behind: schools, synagogues, cemeteries, sacred sites and remembered neighborhoods became anchors of diaspora memory.
